About Me
I'm a web developer currently living in Philadelphia. I've been working in IT for my entire professional career, starting in college working for the Help Desk at UC Boulder. While at UC Boulder I helped wire up the Engineering dorms with ethernet connections. This was pre-wifi, so having a fast Internet connection in your dorm room was a big deal at the time.
I would go from room to room installing a network adapter in incoming freshmans computers. It was a fun job, and I learned a lot as I ended up supporting Windows, Mac, Solaris, BeOS, and even a few early Linux boxes.
I left the University to work for a local firm as a general IT guy. My first day at work, I was given a box of computer parts and told to build 3 computers and keep the best for myself. It was a wonderful job. There were only two of us doing IT work, so whatever work my manager didn't want to do, he'd assign to me.
I upgraded the office from simple network hubs to switches, got a permanent Internet connection running, and did a lot of Netware support. Eventually, I took over the cc:Mail server, and handled a transition to Lotus Notes. Our mail servers actually talked to the central corporate office over a modem if you can believe that!
Lotus Notes turned out to be good for me. I took a new job as an admin and moved to California. I taught myself programming in order to roll out a client upgrade. Lotus Notes allowed you to attach scripts to your emails so I created an "Upgrade" email that launched the client upgrade. My email worked perfectly and I was able to upgrade a few hundred desktops in a week.
I moved again, this time to Pennsylvania. By this time, it was clear that Lotus Notes was a dying technology. I transitioned to SharePoint, and spent the next few years migrating our old Lotus Notes based apps to the web.
Today I'm a full time developer. I'm still mostly working with SharePoint, but I work with everything from React to GraphQL to Lambda.
